IF I HAD MY WAY

With baby eating her lotto and mother nagging her to brush her teeth and her parents running off to a dinner party, Ellie is ripe for a dream of sending the baby back with the delivery man, feeding her parents ""spinach and casserole"" and sending them to bed while she fixes herself brownies and ice cream, and settling their squabbles about which of them she will take to the playground for a special grownups' night out. Ellie's conclusion, that ""grownups sure are a lot of work. . . but I guess they're worth it,"" doesn't strike us as much of a message, and we have the feeling that Norma Klein didn't quite know what to do with her upside-down world once she'd put Ellie in it. Still, other members of the newest recognized minority are likely to get a minor kick out of the wish-fulfilling turnabout.
