Eric Mattson, an excellent fifth year surgical resident in a large mid-western university hospital, is something of a Hippocratic oaf. Dedicated and modest, he is about to be cheated out of his rightful post as Seniro Resident by the winning combo of politics and money. It's a long novel, so practically everybody in the state gets his bit: the Governor has an operation (politics); the local newspaper scion has revenge (power); the noted Chief Surgeon has a suicide in the family and conducts sheep experiments in the attic (pure science); Eric's rival's father-in-law donates a new laboratory (wealth); the nurses have -- (romance); and Eric Mattson keeps his hands well scrubbed... A novel which borrows many of the prostheses of various video versions from Ben Casey to The Nurses. Highly undistinguished.
