A letter to a small-town newspaper touches off an investigation by two college boys of a supposedly accidental, four year old mine explosion and of the reasons why the mine was never reopened. Their questioning brings out some interesting background material about the problems of a coal-mining town with most of the residents unemployed and forced to resort to pirating the coal in order to exist, which overshadows the superficial mystery. The two boys from the newspaper are cool and appealing sleuths.
