PICTORIAL HISTORY OF AMERICAN SPORTS

This for men will have as absorbing an appeal as Women Are Here To Stay, in which Agnes Rogers recorded in text and pictures the steps by which women achieved their present roles, had for women. For here -- from Colonial times to the present- is the word-with-picture story of sports in the United States. Five periods provide the breaks:- 1607 when the Jamestown colony supplied the first record of sports through the Civil War era, to 1870; 1871-1899, the ""Gas Lit Era,"" when football belonged to the boys and golf took its place; 1900-1918, when sports became all-embracing, all pervasive- and many records were established; the golden age from 1919-1930; and today when sports are conceded ""for everyone"". A running text, rather than captions for pictures, gives this greater reading interest- while the tabloid reader will find it to his taste.
