From Oglethorpe's repulse of a Spanish armada off Georgia in the 1740's, to Goral sea, Midway, and the bombing of Europe, this book deals with fifteen crucial battles in our nation's history. The reader may argue with some of the author's choices (he is a former U.S. Congressman, a Reader's Digest editor), but one cannot argue that the battles chosen are not of utmost significance. Here is Yorktown, New Orleans, San Jacinto, Gettysburg, Manila Bay and many others. Here are the commanders who fought them, the political situations which obtained at the time, or which contributed to the war in the first place. The book is a stimulating one. Unfortunately, it is oversimplified, and somewhat sophomoric in tone and approach. One thinks of it as a more successful volume for younger readers, or for those who do not read widely in the fields of history or war.
