FROM THE APOSTLES' FAITH TO THE APOSTLES' CREED

Beginning with the premise that the Apostles' Creed comes from the Apostolic Witness of the Twelve, a premise which seems to overlook the unexplained silence of the New Testament about the majority of the Twelve after the Crucifixion, the author proceeds to examine each phrase of the Creed. Its connections with the teachings of Jesus, its history, and the theological meaning invested in it, are recounted. Sources are almost entirely passages from the New Testament, which are quoted copiously, with occasional citation of early writers. The style is marked by a generous use of italics and of exclamation points. Little is done to consider the phrases of the Creed in terms of modern religious questions and interpretations. The book possibly may be useful to those who are already well seated in a traditional view of the Christian faith but it adds little of general value.
