Ida Wells Bamet, the journalist who spoke out so courageously against lynching, is probably the best known of these four women -- the others being Juliette Derricotte, a social worker who fought for racial equality within and without the YWCA; Maggie Mitchell Walker, who became the first black woman bank president; and Septima Poinsette Clark, an innovative educator who was active in the NAACP, voter registration, and many other causes. The brief, dramatized biographies are just competent and skim over many interesting facets of these women's careers. They will make additional, undemanding selections for large collections. . . but at $6.25 for four thin sketches, discretion may be the better part.
