UNCLE LAWRENCE

Very much a specialty, but the perfect choice for the discerning, so don't miss it. It is little more than a novelette, this story of a summer visit of a young Englishman to his exiled uncle, living on an island in Lake Erie, Ontario, an end-of-nowhere sort of spot. Lawrence was a failure, drifting penniless through the years, surviving from hand to mouth in a rotting shack. It is a moving picture, the old man's inordinate pleasure in seeing someone from home, his pride in the youth, the round of island life, odds and ends of exiles, ""England in old Canada"". A quiet tale, with some lovely writing and a very definite and distinguished quality.
