If one is to accept these episodes of Wagner's early life as fact, the composer of some of the most brooding and monumental operas ever written must have been up to a point a peculiar hybrid of Till Eulenspiegel and Tiny Tim. Stepson of an actor, the love of the stage was early engendered in the lively ""Dicker"". All about him, sensitive adults observe his artistic instincts although not quite sure exactly what expression they finally will take. The death of his stepfather, his close relationship with a younger sister, his early musical training--failures and triumphs--are all recounted here in this readable, lively and often funny book for children who for the most part will not be able for many years to appreciate the unique quality of Wagner's achievements.
