Any resemblance to the tortured, intense composer, whose melodies are marked with melancholy, pathos, and rich despair is purely coincidental in this neat little success story. Although many of the facts of Tschaikowsky's life are given here along with snatches of his themes and the pseudo-Russian illustrations of Christine Price, one could feel, if one were to believe the text, that the bulk of the composer's life was spent jotting down bits of laborers' songs and presenting them gaily to his adored family as one delivers marzipan and candy canes. This attempt to present the haunted Tschaikowsky as a sort of musical Chicken Little serves neither the cause of biography, music nor truth.
