by Orville-Ed. Prescott ‧ RELEASE DATE: Aug. 13, 1965
The distinguished book reviewer of the New York Times says in his introduction that he hopes ""this book will help spread the noble pleasure of fathers reading aloud to their children."" He has not attempted to recover the inaccessible, but has brought between two covers an anthology of the familiar and the favorite with an eye toward the diverse. Offered here are such changes of pace as Grimm, Pyle, Travers, Kipling, Baldwin and Steinbeck with selections from the Bible, Shakespeare, and other poets. While the stories offer challenge in terms of delivery, they do indeed lend themselves to reading aloud. The stories and poems chosen for inclusion have obviously been selected by a man who knows a lot about the value of material that can hold the attention of the adult reader while entertaining a young audience, which also presents, as Mr. Prescott shrewdly points out, an opportunity to instruct as well.
