A volume in the History of European Civilization Library, The Evolution of Russia takes as its thesis the continuity of Russian history (rather than total breakaway) from the ninth century, at the inception of national consciousness, to 1917 and the Soviet takeover. Basic themes are the determining influence of geographical and racial factors and Russia's changing relationship with western Europe. The late Dr. Hoetzsch (recognized in Germany as the leading expert on Russian history, Professor of East European History at Berlin University until he was dismissed by the Nazis, then reinstated after the war) also considers the social, economic and intellectual circumstances which have shaped the destinies of the Russian people. A postscript on events since 1917 provides historical perspective (a later volume will be devoted to the subject.)
