by Pablo La Rosa ‧ RELEASE DATE: April 1, 1996
A first collection of 13 brief stories set in Cuba and the US, focused on the social and psychic aftereffects of Castro's revolution. When La Rosa attempts fable or allegory, the stories creak. But the best of these studies of various forms of alienation and exile display a bracing vitality. Exemplary are ""The Death of Marielito,"" which chronicles the downward spiral of a Cuban black who found only further oppression in the promise of America, and ""The Forbidden Fruit Was a Papaya,"" a delightful tale of sexual confusion vis-…-vis the expectations and inhibitions of Catholicism.
