This high-handed, velvet-gloved affair, which pushes originality to the farther reaches of probability, was left incomplete at Miss Frankau's death and put into final shape by her cousin. A suspense story, it follows the curious career of Colonel Blessington, a war hero, an ""elegant mongrel,"" a man who inherits a fortune to devote part of it to the renascence of the true Tory party in Britain. All viewed with wide-eyed admiration and adoration by Anita Gilroy, a girl half his age, whose father is alerted to Blessington's real identity and his too well remembered viciousness when an acquired phrase drops from her lips. The father is Matthew, slightly ""bonkers,"" who writes attractive Lear-ish verse and does puzzles--the most important of which is the identification of and confrontation with the Colonel.... Rather poshtosh--one of those stories you don't quite believe but you'd like to--particularly since it is Miss Frankau's last book.
