by Patricia Curtis ‧ RELEASE DATE: Aug. 1, 1986
Curtis here offers a raft of pointers (blended with warm personal anecdotes) on how to successfully select, live with, and care for a city dog. Starting with advice on choosing a dog suitable for city living, Curtis covers everything from learning how to properly train and socialize your dog, to how to select nutritious foods and avoid the trap &buying products appealing to the human eye but not necessarily healthy for canines. An urban dweller and dog owner herself, Curtis takes a hard line on careless pet owners, and those who would abandon their animal rather than make the effort to find solutions to problems. Her emphasis on responsible pet ownership surfaces throughout the book, especially in her discussions of neutering (she recommends it for males and females), adopting (she encourages choosing adult dogs), and traveling with a dog (the dangers of leaving pets unattended are stressed). Beyond specific tips on city dog ownership, there are comprehensive, if concise, sections on first aid, grooming, health, caring for an aged pet, and understanding the human/animal bond. A well-rounded, insightful dog-care book.
