THE TWO FACES OF JANUARY

Since Strangers on a Train, the author has been a stellar practitioner in that treacherous area of suspense fiction -- the psychological thriller. Here, Rydal Keener, expatriate American in Athens connives with Chester MacFarland, rich American swindler who has just killed a Greek policeman. Chester looks like Rydal's ather and Chester's wife looks and behaves like Rydal's first, perfidious sweet-heart. What could have been a perfectly engineered escape is continuously, consciously fouled by Rydal, whose punishing memories are stimulated by the fugitive fair. Momentum through motive.
