EVERGLADES COUNTRY: A Question of Life or Death

By now when we're pretty much getting the idea that man's thoughtlessness and greedy exploitation of his environment is quickly leading it and us down the road to extinction, it is refreshing to find a book dealing with an area as threatened as is the Everglades that is not merely a diatribe. Not that Patricia Lauber disputes the human threat to this unique environment; rather she places it in a perspective from which it can be rationally and quietly examined. She notes, not without enthusiasm, the historical ""turning point"" reached in 1970 when construction on what would have been the world's largest jetport was halted due to the realization of its probable ecological consequences to the south of Florida. Not that eternal life is yet guaranteed this ecosystem. Drawing frequently on current research, Ms. Lauber explores the intricate interrelationships which exist among the animal and plant life -- both of which depend so entirely on the vital flow of water -- showing why and how the future of this vast area remains in such delicate balance. Relevant background information and explanations are clear and straightforward. The reader should emerge with a respect and general understanding of the science of ecology as well as a specific appreciation of the uniqueness of the Everglades. Black and white photographs by Patricia Caulfield enhance this appreciation and are interesting in their own right. This is the most informative YA book on the Everglades yet to appear.
