After Glen Rounds' garrulous reminiscences of The Cowboy Trade (KR, 1972) and any number of literary field trips to ranches past and present, the need for another cowboy book is doubtful. But Patricia Lauber has assimilated the lore and science of cattle ranching with her usual facility -- interweaving details on the organization of 19th century cattle drives, modern breeding and roundup procedures, and the businesslike organization of today's large ranching operations with a careful historical rundown and visits to the typical Flying V and Big Cypress spreads. Despite their overall poor quality, the 124 photographs include a large sampling from 19th century archives which convey the authentic look of the old west; these, combined with the emphasis on the practical, unromantic side of the cowboy's job, will add to this documentary's appeal for the more mature western fan.
