HAVE YOU SEEN HYACINTH MACAW?

Would-be detective Abby Jones hears strange noises in vacant apartment 2B, next door; her policeman friend Garcia is investigating a $2000 robbery concerning (as she overhears his phone conversation) a pet or a pet store; her older brother Dan, who works in a pet store, is acting suspicious; and Abby sees a strange girl tearing down a poster offering a reward for anyone who can locate Hyacinth Macaw. The girl, Abby jumps to conclude, is Hyacinth, probably a runaway and possibly involved with Dan in the robbery. In the course of an obligatory, breath-holding entry into apartment 2B as well as some midnight shenanigans at the pet store, Abby and her less adventurous friend Potsie discover that Dan and the girl have been working on a contest entry, and that 2B's noisy occupant is a huge bird--in fact, a $2000 hyacinth macaw, borrowed by another tenant so she could paint its picture for the very same contest. It all comes together mechanically, which may be all that readers of tame, fast-reading mysteries-without-crime require.
