This is the finale of the Sanguinet Saga (The Wagered Widow, 1984, and The Noblest Frailty, 1983), a series of romantic-adventure novels set during the Regency period. Charity Strand has a habit of walking off unattended; that is how she happened upon Mitchell Redmond as he was about to finish off some men who had ambushed him. Mitchell had been on his way to see Charity's brother when he was attacked by Claude Sanguinet's men. Wounded, Mitchell is now taken to the home of Rachel and Tristram Leith, Charity's sister and brother-in-law. Soon they are joined by Charity's brother and Mitchell's brother--everyone has been summoned by the news that Claude Sanguinet is about to launch some terrible strike against the Crown of England. While they are planning a way to thwart Sanguinet, he is executing a plan to kidnap Rachel Leith from under their noses. His men seize Charity by mistake. Charity's brother-in-law leads a search party to find her, but it is Mitchell who rescues her. Armed with the details of Sanguinet's plan to kill the Prince Regent, Charity and Mitchell join forces with her brother-in-law to save England from the tyranny of Claude Sanguinet. Veryan's meticulous details sometimes slow this novel to a near-halt, but for fans of the series the adventure will seem--and is--first-rate.
