Veryan is after Prince Charles Stuart's lost treasure yet again in this fourth book in her Golden Chronicles. Previous novels were rambunctious love stories with plenty of swordplay, stolen kisses, and romanticization of the Jacobite cause. Series followers can look for more of the same in this one, which picks up just after the Battle of Culloden, as Dr. Robert Victor offers to accompany beautiful Rosamond Albritton, her Aunt Estelle, and mischievous dog, Trifle, back home to Sussex after a visit to France. Rosa's fiancÉ, Hal, died at Culloden, fighting, she assumes, for King George, which makes her wary of Victor, who occasionally slips into a Scottish brogue, seems vaguely sympathetic to the Jacobite traitors, and apparently knows something incriminating about her brother, Charles, a mild-mannered country reverend. Back home at Lennox Court, she learns that Charles has been helping Jacobites escape harsh English justice, and that late at night he and Victor (really Robert Victor MacTavish) are puzzling over a coded message revealing details about the Stuart treasure. Then dragoons catch up with Charles, and Victor, who's no M.D. at all, must perform surgery on a fellow courier. But by now Rosa's a Stuart sympathizer, willing to accompany Victor on further treasure-related escapades, and finally to retirement on a quiet Welsh farm. Rosa's simpering, Victor's too obvious disguise, and the author's reliance on doggy misbehavior for comic relief make this fare for none but Chronicles fans.
