Little three-year-old Pip, an AdÉlie penguin, ponders big and little: she's smaller than the emperor penguins--and much smaller than a three-year-old whale who becomes her friend. This gentle, uneventful story imparts a few facts about the Antarctic, along with a nice bit of toddler-scale wisdom. Benson's elegantly drawn illustrations, creatively framed in various patterns, characterize his small protagonist with affectionate humor and a minimum of anthropomorphism. Well wrought and engaging.
