art of the St. George series, this provides a useful short introduction to British history during the Dark Ages. It covers the period from 4 A.D. to the Norman invasion of 1066. The reader unfamiliar with the multiplicity of English kings and counties is skillfully guided through the welter of dates and names from the pagan period to the Battle of Hastings. The way people lived and the customs of farm, town, castle and monastery are briefly described. There are excellent photographs of artifacts from the earliest period and black and white reproductions of museum and library treasures of the later period. The pen and ink drawings are well done, which is not always the case in this uneven series (see review below).
