Responsibility was thrust on Sandy when her father's tractor turned over and his hospitalization in San Francisco, 50 miles away, caused Sandy's mother to join him, leaving their inexperienced daughter to manage the shaken family finances. But with the help of Mr. Baxter, the 4-H leader, Sandy found new ways to make the farm pay. Still, money was tight and it looked as though they would have to sell their home or at least, Dove, Sally's horse. Rosie Kelham, daughter of neighbors in the higher income bracket, spent some time with Sandy and was trapped in the house as an earthquake cut off entrance to the farm. But the Kelhams were so delighted at the development of character shown by Rosie they bought back Dove for Sandy after she unselfishly sold him. The plot is pretty contrived but it may please the horse fans and the 4-H set.
