By the author of last year's The Streak, it is passion which paces the story here while the Alabama hill country lends its soft folk speech to the story of Carp Rambo and the two women he loved. Carp sings and strums a guitar for a casual living, until a steady job at the Magnolia Bar gives him a chance to buy a hound dog for Suzy Ellen, his nineteen year old wife. He buys Bo from Clint Hattram, and in so doing, meets another Ellen, Hattram's wife. Desire flares- all through the summer, but does not lessen Carp's love for Suzy Ellen whose questions are evaded. But with the natural end of the affair, Clint does not forget that Carp has had his wife, nurses his hatred which feeds on an earlier memory of faithlessness, and attempts to destroy him.... A simple story, of sudden emotions, unashamed and to a certain extent exempt from the restrictions of a more conventional morality, provides a transient type of entertainment.
