The result is a macabre collection, marking with tombstones the world's and (""Rain before seven/Dead before eleven""), reflecting the aridity of a Soviet childhood, and making sure that man's mortality is man's decision. A most sophisticated trick of transposition, these have appeared in Punch and other English papers, and are illustrated by Edward Gorey whose work is in complete accord with the text.
