A pick-me-up book of bite-size pieces tells ""The Rest of the Story"" about and behind literary and historical events already noted. Mr. Harvey has a good time and offers one as he tells all about Mother Goose, whose son-in-law was so incensed by her ribbing of royalty that he published her verses to provoke punishment and provided a classic instead. There is sentiment, as in the story of Thomas More and his young wife who refused to see him after smallpox decimated her porcelain beauty until he convinced her with the lovely ""Believe me, if all your endearing young charms"". There are records of grandeur -- as when George Washington rallied the stricken city of Philadelphia from the effects of a death-dealing epidemic by riding his white horse through the streets, in solitary salute, and debunkings -- as with another famous rider, Paul Revere, whose ride immortalized by Longfellow was made by another. Lightly ingratiating.
