BORN INTO LIGHT

A powerful SF novel that is also a nostalgic tale of growing up with this century. In old age, Roger Westwood reminisces about the strange circumstances that shaped his family's life: when he was about 13, a strange, feral boy came to their farm. Roger's widowed mother took the boy in, and he was soon surprising everyone with his learning ability. Another child, a girl, was also adopted, brought to the kind mother by the local doctor. Other similar children lived nearby--quick to learn but physically weak, they matured more quickly than Roger and the ""regular"" children. In time these extraordinary children, and Roger and his sister, marry and have children of their own; and eventually the doctor, who has married Roger's mother, puts the puzzle pieces together for a moving finale. While Jacobs' plot is slow-paced, his story is never dull and is told with restraint and grace.
