SENOR BABY ELEPHANT, THE PIRATE

The same baby elephant who took a trip to France (Baby Elephant's Trunk, 1961, p. 535) is now disguised as a pirate who finds himself on an island off Puerto Rico. Inspired by the stories of Pilar the cook, Senor Elephant goes off in search of buried treasure to the tune of mamata's ""burna suertel"" The map and dagger are important but his basic equipment consists of the vital Spanish expressions he learns en route. A buried trunkful of goodies is his bounteous reward -- pastelillos, platanos fritos, tortas and many more mouth-watering delights. Baby Elephant as Monsieur, Senor or just himself is fast becoming a classic little figure in picture books and his delightful method of learning languages is certainly contagious. Plus- too- Weisgard's pictures.
