A companion volume to The Exile, in that it is the biography of Pearl Buck's father, the dour but impassioned zealot and missionary who broke her mother's heart, with his inhumanity. The daughter has given a singularly dispassionate and objective picture of the man, of his almost fanatical preoccupation with the cause to which he had dedicated his life, and with the strange happiness that came to him out of the ultimate position he held with the Chinese, though to gain it had cost him the affection of his family, the friendship of his associates, the zest for any life outside that he had chosen. The very coldness of the man in his natural human relations makes this a book of intellectual rather than emotional appeal, and for that reason somewhat more limited in probable market.
