Arriving with a ""thin, hard shell of defiant resentment"" Jo (seventeen) finds satisfaction in her domesticity, involvement in a school project to put on a show with the younger kids, true love with ""Brick the hick"" who has conveniently concealed his real identity as a college sophomore. Trite emotions tritely expressed--the pompous title matches the book.
