A pleasant vacation companion, whether for meadow, woods or seashore, though the format is not conductive to use as an actual field guide. Rather is it a book to turn to for identification after a jaunt. The text suggests rambling with a well-in-formed aunt, whose view of nature is encyclopedic, warm, but just a wee bit sentimental. The illustrations are sensitively drawn and reproduced in faithful color, the page layouts suggesting the now familiar sheets of nature stamps following each area division. Descriptive captions, identified by numbers, supply the essential data, but the vagueness of locale may make regional difference fuzzy in the child's mind. An immense amount of information in compact packaging.
