A soundly, roundly exciting story of a boy's three-day struggle against a fire which singes thirteen acres. Phil Mallory, who is bucking his father by refusing to go to college, takes a summer job with the Forest Service where there are other superiors who do not find him responsible. With his dog, Bad News, he goes alone to find and then fight the fire and no one is sent to help him as he hangs in there while running out of food and water. The character-building is minimal but enough to start him thinking about his future and this is to be read for its steady action values along with the occasional authenticating detail about azimuth readings, etc. A fast burn all the way.
