A Beagle anthology incorporating both of his novels, with a couple of short stories for good measure. A Fine and Private Place (1960) offers Thornton-Wilder-ish love, friendship, and lively conversation among the living and non-living denizens of a Bronx cemetery, while The Last Unicorn (1968) follows a motley band of adventurers who aid the gentle creature in her search for the rest of her kind. As for the two stories, they could not be more of a contrast. Beagle describes ""Come Lady Death"" as ""my Isak Dinesen story,"" but surely she would have done something less woodenly sententious with the donnÉe of a fashionable hostess inviting Death to a ball. ""Lila the Werewolf"" is something like Woody Allen out of John Collier, but absolutely gorgeous in its own highly disturbing right. A delightful stocking-stuffer for the whimsically inclined and, as things go nowadays, a bargain.
