THE DESERTER

At his own suggestion, motivated both by boredom and love of country, Levi fakes desertion from his Union ship and infiltrates a Confederate Navy ship and Army outpost with incredible ease. There are of course a few skeptical Southerners and more than a few tense moments, especially after Levi steals a six-page report and bluffs or bludgeons his way through several sentries before delivering it to the Union general. The fact that Levi's story is based on a real adventure helps win acceptance for his unlikely success in what is undeniably a suspenseful recreation.
