by Peter Elstob ‧ RELEASE DATE: March 17, 1939
The first slant on the Spanish prison scene. The author, a youth of 20, recently a member of the Royal Air Force, decides to join the Loyalists as a flier. This follows the procedure, the arrival and waiting to be sent to the Front, and -- during the period of waiting -- his arrest, as Fascist suspect. From there on, a long fight against stupidity and inefficiency, and the inertia of the British consulate. Then the transfer to the death house, Barcelona's Montjuich, holding more than 500 prisoners, of whom many are shot every day. Months more of revolting living, tense waiting, release. Not an angry or hysterical book, on the whole a good humored and sympathetic record.
