In Boston, dial Voice of Audubon (259-8805). For Central American mountain birds, fly in to San Jose, Costa Rica. And for larger gulls in Churchill, Manitoba, drive out to the town dump. Birders may find that this huge international compendium omits some of their favorite spots and provides only sketchy information on others, but some special features compensate for these deficiencies. The authors have included not only choice locations and their regular attractions but also information on access, accommodations, and the incidentals which travelers too often discover too late: how to acquire a permit, which roads timid drivers should avoid, which national park restaurants are expensive. Local maps are also provided as are a few tips on accessories--extra binoculars and two pairs of shoes (mud and dust). In other words, you won't have to wing it in Nairobi or Sri Lanka or New Caldeonia, because you'll know where to rent a car, helicopter in, or seek out a guided tour.
