This fictional treatment of the story of Robert the Bruce is accurate in detail and romantic in execution. The legendary Scot's reclamation of the throne which England tried to take away in the fourteenth century was one battle after the other with Robert continually exhorting an army. His men usually rallied from exhaustion, although it is hard to imagine why on the basis of the examples of his oratory given here. However a younger audience, conditioned to the hollow boom of Hollywood's historicals, may skim right through the dialogue to get to the wellhandled battle scenes, which are presented with attention to the deployment of troops and methods of combat. The extensive bibliography and the author's use of primary source materials guarantee the authenticity of incident and stated ideals.
