OCTOR MELLON OF HAITI

Michelmore, who did an earlier portrait of Einstein (p. 795-1962), now tells the story of William Larimer Mellon, Jr. which has admiration-cum-inspiration values. Mellon, a scion of the prominent family who did not find that wealth contributed to his personal happiness, read an account of Schweitzer's hospital in Africa in LIFE magazine. His destiny resolved, he secured help from Dr. Schweitzer, encouragement from his wife, and with his own two million dollar fortune set up a hospital, sanitation, agricultural and educational facilities in an area of Haiti where poverty, malnutrition and disease had predominated. His hospital is now world-famous and has served as an example and incentive for many other doctors, nurses and teachers. A dedicated life which will reward others through its presentation here.
