With murders and suspects proliferating like poison petals on a green bay tree in a Wisconsin farming village, and a protagonist given to hallucination, you can't see much of anything clearly here--even at the close when the ghost of a girl twenty years dead, may (or may not?) be raising unmerry hell. College professor Miles Teagarden returns to the old homestead to be received by the villagers and surly cousin Duane with barely concealed, and then overt, hostility. The town believes that Miles may have killed his cousin Alison two decades ago when both were swimming in a moonlit quarry, and now that town girls are being murdered, he seems a likely suspect. Who is the killer? Is it sinister young Zack, boyfriend of Duane's nubile daughter (also mysteriously named Alison)? ""Polar Bear,"" the police chief who admits to having raped cousin Alison? Outcast homosexual Paul? Miles himself? Duane? Or is it the returning dead Alison settling scores? It's all so rushed and muddy, perhaps you won't care, although Possession buffs will probably persevere.
