by Peter Townsend ‧ RELEASE DATE: April 6, 1960
A surprisingly attractive travel log of a lonely but determined man's automobile trip, across five continents, it reveals a personal integrity, fortitude, sincerity, and a serious concern for the human spirit which one might not have suspected to dominate the personality of the man who was part of one of the great romantic episodes of out age. Driving cast out of Brussels in October 1956, he returned 18 months and 57,000 miles later after having glimpsed to the lives and lands of people as disparate as a Greek hotel owner, a Pakistani chieftain, a New Zealand sheep rancher, a Japanese Geisha girl, a gas station attendant in Montana, a Venezuelan border guard, and Albert Schweitzer in his jungle hospital at Lambarene, Belgian Congo. Everywhere he experienced the ""instinctive kindness and unfailing goodness of people""--and combining, this with an essentially democratic spirit, a deep religious instinct and an unusual power for honest self-appraisal, he drew from his journey a renewed faith in himself and mankind. There is not a mention of the Royal Family in this fast-moving, kaleidoscopic personal adventure story, raised above the average travel book by the author's insights and simple yet deep appreciation of the world's peoples. A worthy addition to biography, travel or adventure sections.
