Berra, a product of the Dago Hill section of St. Louis, achieved stardom as a Yankee backstop and managerial success with the Mets. A Hall of Famer and three-time American League MVP, there's no catch to this catcher -- he's a self-effacing, unflappable, quietly efficient performer -- in short, a good guy. This bio's title belies not only common knowledge of the man but also the author's contention that he's ""the master of the malaprop, the father of the faux pas."" Thus its emphasis gravitates away from what makes the pilot light up and his highlights on the playing field toward the occasionally zany one-liners. Yogi, so named after an Indian fakir, is assuredly the real thing. But you'll have to peek in the dugout to see why.
