The year 1936 fateful year in which much of the seed reaped today was sown. That year saw Italy's designs against Abyssinia take form; the march on the Rhineland, the failure of sanctions, the collapse of the League, the flight of Franco to Tetuan heralding the beginning of the Civil War in Spain, the reelection of Roosevelt, von Ribbentrop's arrival in London, the Pan-American conference, punctuated at intervals with the drama of King Edward's personal life which culminated in December with his abdication. Guedalla has a faculty for high-lighting his big moments. The book, in most hands, would be scrappy, lacking in focus. He manages to make it timely and good reading.
