Ullman's novelization from Bloom's screen play holds to a tight narrative line, a simple exposition of character and purposeful development of suspense. Kemp, on the trail of outlaw Ben, is involuntarily joined to the old miner, Tate, and the renegade soldier, Anderson, in his hunt, and later, in shares for the reward. Catching Ben, and the girl Lina, Kamp is troubled by doubts of Ben's innocence, by Anderson's readiness to claim the reward with Ben dead rather than alive and by his growing love for Lina. It is in the violence of Indian attack, river flood and murder that Kemp comes to peace with himself and a chance for happiness with Lina. A Western, really, but tense in its drama of morals and ethics.
