NOMI AND THE MAGIC FISH: A Story from Africa

A satisfying Cinderella story from Africa, impressively told by a 15 year-old Xhosa girl. The heroine, Nomi, is starved by her father's second wife but fed by a magical fish until they are discovered by the stepmother, who then kills and eats the fish. Its bones however continue to work in Nomi's behalf, slipping through all fingers but hers when the chief promises to marry whoever can bring him the skeleton. Phumla's words flash with briliant precision and Byard's blue, lime and melon backgrounds have the same dramatic simplicity.
