MYSTERY OF THE GOLDEN HORN

Istanbul, Turkey is the locale for this story of 12 year old Victoria Stewart, who hopes to leave her sense of failure and shame behind her in America only to discover that it has preceded her on her visit to her teacher-father. Her adventures in this strange city with gypsies, fortunetelling, evil omens, the trouble-making orphan Adria, and her own father, eventually lead Vicky to self knowledge and an adjustment to her world and that of her parents. Adria makes so much trouble for herself and Vicky that Vicky eventually comes to think in terms of how she can help Adria if she is to save herself from further punishment and isolation. The mystery of the golden horn is the pivot of a rather contrived series of incidents in a story whose chief interest lies in the setting. The characters are too studied --Adria, high-strung, mystical, other-worldly- and unbelievable; Victoria, self-pityingly belligerent -- and at the end succumbing to a mushy sort of samaritanism. Not her best.
