Linda Earle takes a position as a ski hostess in the Poconos in the old house run by Julian McCabe where his wheelchair-bound wife Margot had -- accidentally? -- gone to her death. In the ""quivering darkness"" of Linda's thoughts, there are many apres-the-fact doubts: was it the fault of Linda's brother, presumably Margot's lover? was it Julian, a famous skier himself? who is responsible for a new fatality? why does Aria, the McCabes' child, blame herself? as for the cat Cinnabar, is it really Margot's ghost? This is much better than Phyllis Whitney's last one (does it make any difference?) -- a powdered snow job for the ladies.
