An undependable lady, is Miss Bottome. She gives us Private Worlds, a first rate best seller; she gives us The Mortal Storm, one of the finest of the novels dealing with modern Germany; and in between she flings out sops to Cerberus, in the form of a public demanding another book. Too bad. This has the ring of a hastily written novel with cardboard figures and unconvincing plot. A girl secretary, suffering from the aftermath of frustrated passion, ponders murder; a woman psychiatrist performs the miracle of analysis at the psychological moment, and saves all hands from each other and themselves -- and starts true love up the right road. Oh yes, it is readable enough, but it is not worth while.
