A collection of stories with a sprightly theme -- the heroes all win through by skill and wit rather than strength. Clever and fearless men, faced with seemingly insurmountable obstacles, come from many lands to delight the readers. There's Robin Hood and Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, there are characters in fairy tales and hero legends and fables; there are contests between man and devil, forces of nature, animals and humans. Some of the sources are classic- the Brothers Grimm, Andrew Lang; some are modern spinners of yarns; and- with Kipling and Howard Pyle, the roster includes contemporaries whose fame is already immortal.
