This all-inclusive, yet somewhat textbookish volume traces man's attitude about the universe around him, and how he has studied and made discoveries about that universe. Starting with the sun worshipping of primitive and Egyptian societies, it journeys through history into the time of Galileo and Newton, beyond there to the modern measurement of space and distance, to telescopy and photometry of the stars, and into the intricacies of celestial navigation today. Although the material is stimulating, and a series of excellent charts serve as illustrative material, the style remains rather uninspired, textbookish. A valuable survey book, and informative.
